African American woman, seated on ground, fishing, at the Tidal Basin, Washington, D.C. Toni Frissell Collection (Library of Congress).
I THINK THIS GAP should be bridged; the recent work of women’s historians includes many little-known stories that would make compelling films, allowing viewers to see the past from a different perspective, bringing their attention to gender and class issues that have direct bearing on current events.

THE SERIES
INVENTING HERSELF will be broadcast nationwide (My previous work has been shown nationwide, in primetime, on PBS). The films would have a long afterlife in schools, universities, and community groups. From my experience speaking with groups like these all over the country, I am confident that there is a need (in all of these settings) for a series of thoughtful, cinematic films about women in American history. In fact, there is a hunger for stories like these!
